The QCD was made permanent in 2015. It is a vehicle so senior taxpayers could tax free make a distribution of their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) directly to a recognized charitable organization. There is a limit of $100,000 per year and the taxpayer must be 70 ½ or older. This distribution is fully explained in IRS Publication 590. What is interesting is that when this was made permanent the RMD was for taxpayers 70 ½. The tax law enacted in 2017 increased the RMD age to 72. Whether this is an oversight by the IRS or intentional I have no idea. But for now the age per the IRS Publication 590 is 70 ½ .
A couple of items to keep in mind are 1) IRA distributions are recognized in the year received 2) Charitable contributions are recognized in the year donated. 3) like all charitable contributions you must have written acknowledgment from the charitable organization of when and how much was donated. 4) you cannot take a QCD and list them also if you itemize deductions.
The QCD must be directly from your IRA custodian to the charitable organization. You would need to contact the charitable organization and get the mailing address to send the check. I suggest that you contact someone in the business office and explain what you are trying to do. So they are aware when the funds arrive. Remind them that you will need written acknowledgment of receipt. You would them contact your IRA custodian and explain to them what you are trying to accomplish. They probably have some form you would need top complete providing the charitable organization information.
Be sure to provide this inform to your tax preparation person.
